Pierre Trudeau is Turning in His Grave

"The Ontario government is the most enlightened in the world. This is the multiculturalism of my friend Pierre Trudeau."

So states Mumtaz Ali, the creature who came up with the idea of introducing the use of Sharia law in Muslim communities in Ontario, which has recently been approved.

Sharia law is a form of family law widely used in countries such as Nigeria, where it justifies stoning to death women who have been victims of rape. Another example of Sharia law is that men are allowed to have 4 permanent and as many "temporary" wives as they want. The children in a marriage belong to the father and even after the father dies it's the father's family that gets the custody, not the mother.

Supposedly, the Ontario Sharia law will abide to the Canadian charter of rights. But how on earth will Muslim women know this? How many of them even know about the charter of rights? How many of them know that they don't have to accept their husbands religiously marriying other women? How many of them know that their husbands aren't allowed to beat them? How many of them will be just too scared of being shunned and expurged from the only community they've known for their entire lives?

What next, Ontario? Is female genital mutilation going to be legal one day too? It is of course a major cultural practice, and Canada is a neat little multicultural country. In Ethiopia everyone knows that women who don't have their vulvas and clitoris chopped off and sewn up are disgusting and repulsive. We have to respect that, don't we? It's culture after all.

My respect to those who believe in the separation of church and state. And I DON'T want to hear from those of you who think that culture can EVER be separated from religion.

P.S. Sexism SUCKS.
